8/23/2007 - I think today I've made what I hope you all feel is
one of the coolest updates to our site ever. If you turn any
other music off and turn up your volume a bit, you should now be
hearing some new tunes. Over the home page you should be
hearing the GHS Fight Song, "Onward Greenville".
Over our
roster page, you should now be hearing the GHS Alma Mater.
I've wanted to do this in the past, but had no idea if these songs
existed in the correct format or who to approach if they did.
Then about 2 weeks ago, Charlie Brumbaugh suggested including both
these songs on the site. I put the ball back in his court and
told him that if he could get me the files I would love to do just
that.
Charlie
contacted Jeff Hufnagle who gave him the name and address of Ken
McCoy - and things began rolling from there. With
some legwork from Charlie and some grease from me, we now have both
songs permanently on the site! Charlie, Jeff and I would first
thank Ken McCoy. He's the one who suggested Charlie contact
Mr. Charlie Massey.
He did
and Mr. Massey wrote back to us with this:
Gentlemen,
I am in receipt of your request. My friend, Ken McCoy has been
working for years to get me to dig through my tapes and I have
resisted. Guess I have a tough time dealing with the past. At my
age, I have a lot more past then future so guess I should get on
with it.......
I'll try to dig into my library (two big cardboard boxes) and see
what I have. I'll get back to you within the coming week and let you
know what I've found.
Best wishes,
Charlie Massey
GHS Band Director 1965-69
Later
that same day he sent this:
Hi Chris &
Charlie,
I found recordings of both requested songs which were made at the
spring concert of 1969. I edited and made mp3's of them for you. It
was the ONLY recording I have.
I have no information as to the composers of the songs or when they
were written. It runs in my mind that "Onward Greenville" was
written by Dwight Brown but am not sure of that. I do believe that
the arrangements were by John McCoy and that could be confirmed by
Ken.
Let me know if you use them.
Best wishes,
Charlie Massey
And as
you hear, Mr. Massey came through in spades!! And we are all
deeply in his debt. Like probably most of you, I hadn't heard
either of these songs for many, many years. Hearing both
brought back a flood of memories and gave me goose bumps - I hope
they have the same affect on you!
So I
want to thank Messrs. Brumbaugh, McCoy and particularly Massey for
helping with this project. If you'd like to personally thank
Mr. Massey, here's his addy (I feel confident that he'd love to hear
from any GHS Alumni):

Now
I need someone to send me the lyrics! And any other info you
have on either of these songs. |
